Ballet Today

In the early 20th century, ballet changed. People started to get tired of traditional Classical ballet and wanted to see something new. An exciting new era known as Neoclassical ballet began.

The Ballets Ruses

The driving force behind this change was a man called Sergey Diaghilev, a Russian producer and director. Diaghilev brought together a company called the Ballet Russes that toured Europe and America with exciting new ballets that were much more expressive and dramatic than the traditional Classical ballets that had gone before.

Diaghilev brought in new composers such as Igor Stravinsky, and revolutionary artists, such as Pablo Picasso, who created innovative music, sets, and costumes for his ballets. He also sighned the famous Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova, for their first Paris season in 1909. The Ballet Russes is regarded as one of the most influential ballet companies of the 20th century because it changed things so much.
